
Dawn N. Ericson
Artist, Natural Science Illustrator, Designer, Art Director, Professor of Drawing, Publisher
A native of Southern California, Dawn was raised on an avocado ranch in the rolling hills of La Habra Heights. From an early age she was passionate about drawing. Her subjects: PORTRAITS & WILDLIFE, including native chaparrals and ocean habitats. These have remained themes of her work. Ericson’s mediums are: india ink & scratchboard, oil on linen canvass & birch wood board, the sketchbook with conte and lithography – printing.
Ericson studied at the Art Center College of Design during high school and continued into college for a Bachelor Degree in Illustration. Simultaneously, she took accredited writing and journalism classes at UCLA.
Her first professional art position was with the Walt Disney Company, a Designer and Artist in the merchandising department at Disneyland, and at the University of Disneyland with an extraordinary and legendary boss – Van Arsdale France.
In 1969, Ericson was one of the first female Advertising Art Director at a major advertising agency in California, Needham, Harper & Steers Advertising, on the Continental Airlines account. Her work won a prestigious BELDING Award for national magazine ads introducing the Boeing 747. As an Art Director and Illustrator she received two LULA awards, two awards from the Art Director of LA, and two awards from the Society of Illustrators, NY.
